Christmas Movie 19 - 19th December 2015 - The Polar Express

I'm not sure where to start with this one. Dark, dark movie, full of dream scenarios; veils of darkness which can't be breached, inability to catch up with the person you most need to talk to, an out of control roller coaster, characters appearing out of the darkness for fleeting interactions before they disappear again and of course falling!

Some of the animation and styling reminds me of some styling in the game Metro 2033 (work with me here). An example scene from The Polar Express is when Hero Boy is trying to return Hero Girl's ticket and climbs on to the roof. He encounters a man making coffee by a fire lit in the deep snow on the roof of the train. It reminds me so much of the tunnel villages in Metro 2033; both how I imagined them from the descriptions in the novel and in their "reality" in the game; about 40 seconds into the intro:

If you haven't read Metro 2033 by the way - do so, it's amazing.

The detail in The Polar Express is lovely, like the scene with the driver's hairpin in the locomotive:

Ultimately it's a story about the wonder of childhood, nightmares, dreams and discovery of belief:

Hero Boy:
At one time most of my friends could hear the bell, but as years passed it fell silent for all of them. Even Sarah found one Christmas that she could no longer hear its sweet sound. Though I've grown old the bell still rings for me, as it does for all who truly believe.
